Training and Development
Regardless of your experience prior to joining OEC, we make sure you have the industry knowledge to hit the ground running and succeed in your role here. Our versatile training program connects employees with the right resources to learn, including test modules, quizzes, informational sessions, group activities and individual review time.
New Hire Training
OEC gives new hires the chance to learn the principles of freight forwarding through a combination of classroom learning and interactive activities, supplemented with live, on-the-job training to maximize our employees’ potential. For many of our new hires, this curriculum starts in “Freight School,” OEC’s week-long training course that familiarizes new hires in certain regions with its operations. For new hires who don’t go to freight school, though, the New Hire Training will still make sure that you’re prepared for whatever the shipping industry throws at you.
New hires in OEC’s sales division will train alongside sales representatives with a variety of specialties and experience. After the first week of freight school, sales hires will observe, cold call and shadow Account Executives while learning and innovating their own technique. The following weeks will involve a rotational training period between operations and sales. OEC’s sales training was created to allow candidates with all kinds of sales experience – from novices to experts – to become successful salespeople and account executives.
Professional Skills Training
Our professional training department offers a series of skill-based courses in line with our belief in continued learning and development. These courses include subject matter like Basic Excel and Intermediate Excel. OEC also offers company-paid training opportunities for our employees to earn external certifications. For example, members of our customs brokerage department are offered training compensation for obtaining their customs brokerage license. Other potential specialty certification areas include Dangerous Goods or Project Management. Our management team is always open to discussing what skills can bring improvement and efficiency to our teams.
Leadership Training
The goal to learn and improve applies to everyone at OEC, including our leaders. That’s why OEC gives our leaders the opportunity to take courses on our in-house e-learning platform, Moodle, with training courses available on interviews, the transition to supervisor, how to excel as a manager, and disciplinary procedure. We also offer leadership training to help our leaders implement new management practices. At OEC, professional development is a top priority that doesn’t disappear once you become a leader.
